In the midst of what appears to be a tumultuous period for the Democratic Party, Kamala Harris has unexpectedly found herself in the spotlight. There are indications that she’s already assembling a roster of potential vice-presidential candidates should she secure the Democratic presidential nomination. With Joe Biden stepping down, the frantic search for a new VP choice has kicked off, bearing more resemblance to a reality TV show casting process than a thoughtful political strategy.

Topping this seemingly absurd list is Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ), an astronaut-turned-senator who, along with his spouse, ex-congresswoman Gabby Giffords, has pledged his support to Harris. While his history of space travel and strong stance on gun control due to personal tragedy and advocacy make him an interesting candidate, it’s doubtful whether he can bring the necessary charisma to bolster a Harris campaign.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is another name that’s been causing a stir due to his progressive policies and rising status within the party. His East Coast persona and record of combating corruption may appeal to some, but it remains to be seen whether his regional popularity will translate into national appeal.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear is also in the running. Beshear has successfully navigated Kentucky’s complex political landscape with a moderate approach and Southern charm. His victory in a traditionally red state might be seen as strategic, but questions remain over whether he possesses the charisma needed to mobilize the Democratic base.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper should not be overlooked either. Known for his stable leadership and moderate views similar to Beshear, Cooper has tackled issues such as Medicaid expansion and teacher pay raises. However, it’s unclear if he can generate enough excitement for the ticket. It seems that Harris is casting her net wide in hopes of balancing the ticket with someone who can attract a broad range of voters.

The situation is further complicated by endorsements and snubs. While Harris has received support from Democratic heavyweights like Bill and Hillary Clinton, Alex Soros, and even Joe Biden himself, notable figures such as California Governor Gavin Newsom, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have opted to remain silent or praise Biden without endorsing Harris. Even Barack Obama notably omitted Harris from his statement, expressing confidence in the party’s process to select an excellent nominee.

In a surprising development, the Biden campaign has rebranded to “Harris for President,” indicating a desperate push to rally behind her candidacy. Staff members are being reassured about their roles, and the campaign’s funds will be redirected to support Harris.

So, what’s next in this political rollercoaster? Will one of these VP hopefuls rise to the occasion and boost Harris’ slim chances? Or will the Democratic Party face more internal strife as they navigate this uncharted transition? Many remain doubtful that Kamala will even secure the nomination, so there’s plenty more drama left to unfold.
