Debunked Claims Resurface in Vice Presidential Debate: A Closer Look

A whirlwind of controversy was stirred up during the recent face-off between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. In a surprising twist, Harris revived a long-discredited narrative involving Trump’s alleged comments about the tragic events that transpired in Charlottesville.

“Very fine people on both sides” – the claim that was debunked yet made an unexpected comeback during Tuesday night’s debate.

This dubious assertion has been refuted numerous times by various fact-checkers, including Snopes, a platform not particularly known for its leniency towards Trump. Despite this, Harris chose to rehash this narrative, misleading viewers about the reality of Trump’s words.

The Charlottesville incident unfolded on August 11 and 12, 2017, during the Unite the Right rally. Initially organized as a protest against removing the Robert E. Lee statue from a park, it quickly devolved into violent clashes between far-right groups and leftist counter-protesters. The turmoil culminated in a self-identified white supremacist driving his car into a crowd, causing one fatality and injuring at least 19 others.

“There were fine people on each side.” – The claim made by Harris during the debate, misrepresenting Trump’s actual statement.

Trump’s actual remarks during a media briefing post-tragedy were quite different. He explicitly referred to those protesting the statue’s removal, stating: “You had people in that group that were there to protest the taking down of, to them, a very very important statue and the renaming of a park from Robert E. Lee to another name.” Concurrently, he unequivocally condemned neo-Nazis and white supremacists.

Yet, Harris persisted in pushing this falsified narrative during the debate. She attempted to brand every statement from her opponent as a falsehood, without offering any counter-evidence. This appeared to be a desperate bid to undermine Trump and deflect attention from the substantive issues at stake.

Seven years have passed since the Charlottesville tragedy, yet Harris continues to peddle this “very fine people” fib. Her readiness to smear Trump and his supporters is apparent. It’s high time for Harris to stop disseminating disinformation and concentrate on addressing the genuine challenges our nation faces. As for the debate, Trump maintained his composure, while Harris resorted to desperate maneuvers. The real victor was clear.
