San Francisco Recommends Indoor Masking as COVID-19 Concerns Escalate

In light of growing apprehensions about COVID-19, officials in San Francisco are once again recommending that citizens wear face masks while indoors. This suggestion comes over four years after the initial outbreak of the pandemic and is a response to the rising levels of coronavirus detected in wastewater throughout the city and across California.

Health Advisory Issued by Public Health Department

The San Francisco Department of Public Health has taken to the X platform to urge individuals to wear a “well-fitted mask” in certain indoor environments. The department’s post read, “Make this summer a healthy one for yourself and others. With COVID-19 circulating, please consider wearing a well-fitted mask in crowded indoor spaces.”

Surge in COVID-19 Figures

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), corroborated by the San Francisco Chronicle, indicates that California is among several states with “very high” wastewater levels of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. Elevated levels have been reported at most sewage treatment plants in the Bay Area, including those in San Francisco. The city’s seven-day average test positivity rate is currently 6.5%, compared to a statewide level of 13.8% as of last Friday. Although some indicators suggest that the rate of spread may be slowing, California continues to be one of 36 states where infections are on the rise.

COVID-19 accounts for 1.6% of deaths in California, up slightly from the week before, but remains well below past peaks.

President Biden’s COVID-19 Diagnosis

Last weekend, President Joe Biden announced that he was entering a period of isolation at his Delaware home following a positive COVID-19 diagnosis, despite having received multiple vaccines designed to prevent virus transmission. His diagnosis coincided with his withdrawal from the presidential race, which has led to questions about the authenticity of his illness. Biden has since returned to the White House, assuring the public that his symptoms have been resolved.
