Comey’s Reckless Antics: The Left’s Double Standard on “Threats” and Accountability

The latest stunt by former FBI Director James Comey is yet another glaring example of the deep-seated hypocrisy rampant among the liberal elite. Once again, Comey—a figure who has long been associated with controversy and partisan politicking—has managed to create a distraction while dodging any semblance of accountability.

During his recent appearance on MSNBC’s Deadline: White House, Comey sought to shift blame onto the Trump administration for the fallout that followed his now-deleted Instagram post. As many have pointed out, that very post appeared to be a veiled assassination threat against President Donald Trump. Instead of owning up to what can only be described as reckless behavior, Comey dismissively referred to the uproar as a mere “distraction,” a comment that further underscores his contempt for a conservative administration.

The Instagram post featured a photograph of seashells arranged to spell the numbers “8647.” While Comey arrogantly insisted that he simply found the formation “clever,” critics were quick to expose the inherent danger in the message. In many circles, the term “86” is unmistakably linked to the act of killing or eliminating someone. This ambiguity transforms what might have been a trivial post into a perilous insinuation. Notably, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard told Fox News that Comey should be arrested for what she labeled a clear threat against the president.

Yet, when pressed on the matter, Comey doubled down during his interview. He stated:

“Well I regret the distraction and the controversy around it. But again, it’s hard to have regret about something that even in hindsight looks to me to be totally innocent for the reasons you said… But yeah, I didn’t have a gut check. In the Trump-era, I’ve been investigated a lot, audited a lot, and so it’s not my first rodeo.”

This unabashed dismissal is not new for Comey. His consistent pattern of deflection—be it during the Hillary Clinton email investigation or through his media leaks—has long been a source of frustration for conservatives. The former FBI Director’s attempts to cast himself as a victim of Trump-era scrutiny are laughable when one considers the clear evidence of his misuse of power for political gain.

The White House wasted no time in condemning Comey’s dangerous rhetoric. Deputy Press Secretary Harrison Fields sharply criticized his actions, stating:

“Disgraced former FBI Director James Comey, whom President Trump fired for gross incompetence and unfitness for the role, suffers from an incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome. His recent doubling down on incomprehensible and dangerous rhetoric directed at President Trump underscores his derangement and commitment to divisiveness and politics rather than loyalty to the country.”

This statement gets to the heart of a much larger issue—the blatant double standard practiced by the liberal media. While they rush to defend figures like Comey, they conveniently overlook the legitimate security threats facing President Trump, including multiple assassination attempts during the 2024 campaign. For instance, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks once fired a shot that grazed the president’s ear in Butler, Pennsylvania, and similarly, Ryan Routh aimed to target the president at his Florida golf course.

Yet, despite these stark realities, liberal sympathizers continue to tacitly support Comey and his ilk. Figures like him continue to stir up chaos while the mainstream media, always biased in favor of the left, conveniently avoids holding them accountable. MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace, for example, provided Comey with a platform to spin his narrative, refusing to press him on the alarming implications of his post. This is the same network that routinely amplifies unfounded attacks on Trump while downplaying genuine threats against him.

The double standard could not be more evident. If a conservative had posted a similarly ambiguous message about a Democratic president, we’d be witnessing an immediate storm of calls for legal repercussions. Instead, Comey—a prized asset of the anti-Trump establishment—receives nothing but a free pass. This is yet another clear sign that the liberal media is more interested in protecting its cronies than in upholding the rule of law.
