### Provocative Rewrite ###
California’s African American community is erupting in a storm of indignation. Two groundbreaking reparations bills, masterminded by Democrat Sen. Steven Bradford, are teetering on the brink of defeat in the closing hours of California’s legislative season. Senate Bills 1403 and 1331, designed to birth a new state agency and fund to expedite reparations for the descendants of enslaved African Americans, are being met with formidable opposition from a surprising adversary: Governor Gavin Newsom himself. Remember, California was never a slave state.
The reparations movement surged earlier this year when the California Legislature’s Black Caucus unveiled an impressive roster of 14 bills, as reported by California Matters. However, Sen. Bradford, an outspoken advocate on the issue and member of the state’s reparations task force, dared to dream bigger with his legislation. His bills suggest the creation of the California American Freedmen Affairs Agency, a beacon for Black Californians seeking to trace their roots, verify their reparations eligibility, and expedite their claims.
While maintaining an air of mystery about its position, the governor’s office has allegedly expressed unease about the financial fallout of the bills, according to The Sacramento Bee. Newsom’s administration attempted to dilute Bradford’s bold vision by proposing that California State University should continue to “study” the issue rather than establishing a new agency. This maneuver has ignited fury among advocates and Black leaders who argue that after four years of research into reparations, it’s time for decisive action instead of further procrastination.
The Gateway Pundit previously revealed that the committee is requesting a staggering $5 million in taxpayer funds just to devise a reparations plan. With California recently grappling with a $47 billion budget deficit, the administration is understandably apprehensive about the potential costs associated with launching a reparations program. Latina California Republican Kate Sanchez voiced her anxieties, spotlighting the astronomical potential costs tied to reparations—estimated to skyrocket up to $800 billion. “That’s a whopping two and a half times the size of our entire state budget,” Sanchez cautioned. “Funding that would necessitate a tax hike of unprecedented proportions.”
Black Californians are expressing their fury and disillusionment, with some issuing stern warnings to Newsom. “The governor needs to realize that the world is scrutinizing California, and this will directly influence your ally, Kamala Harris, in her presidential race,” one resident declared. “Advance the bills now, vote on them, and ratify them… We have been waiting for 400 years.”
