Megan Rapinoe’s actions during a recent Seattle “pride” parade have once again brought her hypocrisy into the spotlight. Alongside her partner, former WNBA star Sue Bird, Rapinoe served as grand marshal for the event. During the parade, journalist Katie Daviscourt of The Post Millennial approached Rapinoe and Bird, posing a question that clearly made Rapinoe uncomfortable.
Daviscourt questioned Rapinoe about the U.S. women’s soccer team’s notable loss to a high school boys team in 2017, and asked whether it was fair for transgender athletes to compete in girls’ sports. Rather than providing a straightforward answer, Rapinoe responded by simply laughing awkwardly and taking a sip from her drink. This incident underscores Rapinoe’s inconsistent stance, given that she has been an outspoken supporter of transgender athletes competing in women’s sports.
In April, Rapinoe was among numerous athletes who signed a letter pleading with the NCAA to permit transgender “women” to compete in women’s sports. The letter contended that prohibiting transgender athletes would be on the wrong side of history, asserting that sports should be inclusive to all. However, it appears that the only consideration is for men who identify as women, with little thought given to women who would have to compete against them. This blatant disregard for the safety and fairness of women’s sports is a startling revelation about Rapinoe’s intentions and those of the other signatories of the letter.
Of note is the fact that Rapinoe has retired from soccer and thus will not personally face competition from males in her sport. Her actions seem more performative than practical, as she won’t bear the consequences of her advocacy. This privilege she grants herself while pushing for policies that could negatively impact other female athletes smacks of hypocrisy.
Rapinoe’s endorsement of transgender athletes in women’s sports also contradicts her call for defunding the police. As a member of the USWNT, Rapinoe publicly kneeled in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, which advocates for police defunding. Yet, when confronted by Daviscourt, she had no qualms about being shielded by a large, intimidating security guard. This selective application of security principles starkly contrasts with her public stance and further highlights her inconsistency.

The time has come to see Megan Rapinoe for what she truly represents: a hypocrite who promotes ideas that serve her interests, while disregarding their potential effects on others. Her discomfort and uneasy laughter when faced with her own contradictions suggest that her actions may not be grounded in genuine beliefs or principles.
We must not allow Rapinoe and others like her to manipulate women’s sports and compromise the safety and fairness of these spaces. It is high time we stood up for the rights of genuine female athletes and disregarded the voices of those who do not have their best interests at heart.
