Egyptian President’s Alleged Financial Support to Trump’s 2016 Campaign Revealed

The Washington Post recently conducted an investigation that brought to light a covert federal probe into allegations that Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi might have channeled $10 million into Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. This investigation, which remained under wraps for over three years, aimed to ascertain if a $10 million donation made by Trump to his own campaign shortly before the election was in reality funded by the Egyptian government.

Genesis of the Investigation

The probe was initiated in 2017, triggered by classified U.S. intelligence that hinted at Sisi’s intention to financially back Trump’s campaign. In the early part of 2019, federal investigators stumbled upon a substantial cash withdrawal from the National Bank of Egypt on January 15, 2017, a mere five days before Trump assumed office. The withdrawal was tied to an organization named the Research and Studies Center requesting $9,998,000 in cash. The sum, assembled in $100 bills, was packed into two large bags and subsequently collected by four men.

Supreme Court Tussle

The inquiry originated during Trump’s presidency and involved Special Counsel Robert Mueller. Mueller’s team delved into multiple elements, including a hush-hush court battle to secure records from the Egyptian bank, a skirmish that eventually reached the Supreme Court. Despite securing nearly 1,000 documents from the bank, investigators were unable to definitively determine the origin of the funds. This led to a stalemate and ultimately resulted in U.S. Attorney Michael Sherwin closing the case.

The Post pieced together the court fight using records that were later released with redactions, other documents that remain secret, and interviews with people with knowledge of the case.

…By early February 2019, the bank relented and delivered almost 1,000 pages, including versions of bank documents in Arabic and English.

Those bank records contained one especially tantalizing item: a short handwritten letter dated Jan. 15, 2017, in which an organization called the Research and Studies Center asked that the bank “kindly withdraw a sum of US $9,998,000” from its Heliopolis branch…

Reactions to the Accusations

A spokesperson for Trump’s campaign brushed off the allegations as “Fake News” and pointed fingers at “Deep State Trump-haters and bad faith actors.” A representative for the Egyptian government declined to comment in detail but noted that the Justice Department had closed the investigation without pressing any charges.

“The investigation referenced found no wrongdoing and was closed,” spokesman Steven Cheung told WaPo. “None of the allegations or insinuations being reported on have any basis in fact. The Washington Post is consistently played for suckers by Deep State Trump-haters and bad faith actors peddling hoaxes and shams.”
